Fidel Castro Dead At 90

Fidel Castro, Cuba's former president and leader of the Communist revolution, has died aged 90, state TV has announced.

Fidel Castro ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost half a century before handing over the powers to his brother Raul in 2008.

His supporters praised him as a man who had given Cuba back to the people. But his opponents accused him of brutally suppressing opposition.

He made very few public appearances after that time. Castro was reportedly battling Diverticulitis -- a swelling of the colon -- at the time of his death.

Castro had ruled the Caribbean island since the revolution in 1959. He was at the helm when Cuba and the U.S. went to the brink of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962.

He is survived by at least 9 children and numerous grandkids.
